Chapter 6  - In a Nutshell: Designing Your Program

Questions/problems for discussion and review – Chapter 6

Class Discussion

  1. What do you think the author means when she says “We expect too much from too little”?
  2. Why is the “still” method of education still used in many classrooms if it really is so ineffective? Does that mean that the facilitator should never present a body of material to the group?
  3. Illustrate three ways (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) to teach infant nutrition basics.

Research Problem

Search the web to find an example of family life programs that are popular but not evidently grounded in research or that do not use an interactive or praxis (action with reflection) approach. Now find a program that is grounded in research and provides interactive learning. Which of the two was easier to find and to use? Conduct a random survey of parents or couples and ask them which program is most appealing and why. What conclusions would you draw from this?

Case Study Design

Using the teen parent population suggested in the chapter text, divide the class into small groups to develop a program step by step for this population.
