Chapter 7 - Evaluation of Family Programs
Questions/Problems for Discussion and Review – Chapter 7
Class Discussion
- Describe how you would do a needs assessment, a formative evaluation, and a summative evaluation for a one-night, 3-hour workshop on “Balancing Work and Family.”
- Identify possible inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, and indicators for the same program.
- How would you gather qualitative data in the above situation? Quantitative data?
- Describe possible initial, intermediate, and long-term outcomes that may occur as a result of attending the “Balancing Work and Family” workshop. Could all be carried out at the end of the workshop, that is, at the end of that same day?
Research Problems
Locate one or more of the evaluation studies cited on page 113. What were the results regarding program effectiveness? Is there a common characteristic of successful programs?
Identify a large federal grant opportunity that focuses on prevention rather than intervention. How would evaluation be different for a program that focuses on prevention?
Read Chapter 2, “The Five-Tiered Approach to Evaluation: Context and Implementation” by F. H. Jacobs, in Evaluating Family Programs by H. B. Weiss and F. H. Jacobs (1988). Provide examples of evaluations performed at each tier.
Case Study Design
Your 6-week workshop, “Sexuality and Your Teen,” has not been going as well as you had hoped. Attendance has been dropping. Attendees seem distracted, and it has been difficult to engage them in group discussion. How would you best go about finding out what the problem is?
What are some of the possible reasons for their discontent?
