Chapter 8 - Foundations of Sexuality Education
Questions/Problems for Discussion and Review – Chapter 8
Class Discussion
- Looking at the 60 years of history of sexuality education and the “sexual revolution,” what have been the benefits and the detriments of this societal movement? Could education have had a greater positive impact? In what ways?
- If teacher education certification should require a course in health education, what teachers should be required to take it? Is a general course in health education sufficient to teach sexuality education? Why or why not?
- If the majority of parents desire sexuality education in the public schools, do you think that a vocal minority who oppose it should be allowed to control the decisions of school administrators? Why is sexuality education such a hot topic?
Research Problems
Review the theories presented in this chapter as bases for sexuality education. Then search the current scholarly journals for program design reviews. Identify at least one program that exemplifies each theory, and give examples to support your answer.
Take a random sample survey of students at your university regarding their level of sexuality education and its perceived effectiveness. Develop a phone survey or questionnaire that will allow you to define which type of education experience they had and how they would evaluate it.
Case Study Design
Using the contexts of sexuality education discussed in the chapter, divide the class into small groups to design educational programs that would be appropriate for different ages and societal contexts. Be sure to include programs for adults and for persons with disabilities. How would you address the issues of sexual orientation and sexual abuse?
