Chapter 9 - Approaches to Sexuality Education
Questions/Problems for Discussion and Review – Chapter 9
Class Discussion
In public school programs, how should administrators determine what subjects and value approaches to cover?
How can family life educators promote non-school programs and culturally diverse programs of sexuality education in the community? What can boost your confidence to conduct such programs?
Look at Figure 9.1. Are there areas of sexual experience that Dailey has failed to include? Why and how do contexts of the family and society impact each of the overlapping circles of sexual expression?
Research Problems
What research has been done on the effectiveness of parent-teen programs? What areas seem to show the most improvement?
Using the values articulated in Box 9.1 , develop and administer a questionnaire to several diverse audiences to assess their level of agreement with the statements. Write a report of your findings.
Case Study Design
Divide the class into several groups, each representing a board of education. Assign a person in each group to represent one of the following: a member of one of two different ethnic minority groups, a religiously conservative person, a bank vice president, a parent whose child was molested at a school playground, a member of Planned Parenthood, a young teacher in the school system, and a veteran school nurse. Each board has the task of determining the level of comprehensiveness of sex education courses and programs in their school. How do they come to consensus?
